About Us

For over 500 years, skilled artisans in southern China have been hand making xiang yun sha silk, which literally translates to "perfumed cloud clothing." The silkworm life cycle in Southern China is a self contained ecosystem unique to the area: fish ponds are created, mulberry trees are planted. The leaves from the mulberry tree feed the silkworms, while the silkworms poop is used to feed the fish. The mud from the fish pond is used as fertilizer for the mulberry trees.

Skilled artisans have been handing down their unique techniques for generations. The silk mill is proud of their products and describe the silk as an emblem of cultural heritage, Daoist philosophy, and the magical workings of Mother Nature. Historically, the entire Pearl River delta made this silk, but today there are only a few people left. This cultural heritage needs to be protected and preserved, especially in an era of mass consumption and fashion waste -iang yun sha silk is unlike any other silk in the world. All ingredients are natural, and the process is completely sustainable, from beginning to end. Every yard of silk is different and produced in small batches, 15 yards at a time. The process of making the silk is time consuming, requires expertise, and is dependent upon the weather. It includes coating the silk with iron-rich mud, dyeing it in vegetable juice, and baking it in the sun. It's made only four months out of the year starting in Spring. The silk is wrinkle-resistant, anti-microbial, and skin nourishing.
